Bodegas Campo Viejo, 1st Spanish winery to be certified CarbonNeutral®

Last Updated 28 April 2022

Bodegas Campo Viejo is the first Spanish winery to achieve CarbonNeutral® certification, making it the Spanish wine industry benchmark in terms of respect for the environment and sustainability.

To become a CarbonNeutral® company, Campo Viejo implemented measures to minimise its carbon footprint. Moreover, they offset it by following the Kyoto Protocol guidelines and participating in projects backed by the United Nations.

The measures taken to reduce the company’s carbon footprint include reducing the weight of its bottles from 550 to 380 grams while maintaining their functionality and appearance, the use of electricity from renewable sources and optimising packaging.

In addition, Campo Viejo has participated in a project backed by the UN and validated to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) consisting of the construction of a run-of-river hydro project on the River Heihe in Gansu Province (China), thereby offsetting its remaining carbon emissions.

By obtaining CarbonNeutral® certification, we can assure our clients and consumers that they are not only obtaining a quality wine, but also that our production processes respect the environment and that we are thus contributing to building a better future for generations to come.

This initiative forms part of the programme Campo Viejo: Medioambiente y Sostenibilidad (Campo Viejo: Environment and Sustainability) which started 10 years ago with the inauguration of the new facilities.

It covers all aspects of its activities – from using smart irrigation techniques and natural pest control practices in the vineyards, to analysing processes in order to find ways of minimising energy and water consumption and eliminating direct emissions, including the redesign of bottles and packaging.

This new certification is yet another step in Bodegas Campo Viejo's commitment to the environment and sustainability, which constitutes one of the pillars of its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy.
